A preview code was provided by the publisher. Still, Card Shark doesn't seem likely to become one of Devolver Digital's most-beloved releases.Ĭard Shark is set for release in 2022. The game might also just suffer from a slow starting, as towards the end, the story definitely became more interesting than it had been. In my first task, I am to peek at the cards of my soon-to-be benefactors mark at an inn while pouring him a drink, then signal to my benefactor the poor mark’s suit by cleaning. As this is a demo, it's definitely possible that the final version of Card Shark will be stronger than the one presented here. Likewise, the card tricks you’ll perform in Card Shark, a game about fleecing money from filthy-rich aristocrats in 18th century France, are all about performance. The art is definitely fantastic, but it's not enough to make up for frustrating gameplay and a story that's just not particularly interesting or compelling.

Overall, the demo version of Card Shark is disappointing. Card Shark is iPad and retina display compatible, and features the ability to install custom tables. The fact that shuffling makes people more suspicious than walking away and returning to cut the deck feels absurd. Card Shark includes a diverse and growing collection of solitaire and traditional card games. Generally, the players aren't really that suspicious of the player character literally leaving the room between deals. Other tricks, though, see the player getting up from the table, leaving, pulling the best cards out of a second deck and then returning to the table to then stack the deck by cutting it. There's also no indication that other parts of Card Shark will allow the player to choose their trick, and somewhat annoyingly, the one instance that does allow that choice doesn't seem to involve any real strategy.

Later, in the game's defense, one level allows the player to select from a number of different type of tricks in order to earn money, though as mentioned earlier in this preview, it's not at all clear why money matters. This is slightly ameliorated by later tricks building on ones that were learned earlier, but overall, Card Shark doesn't really take its time in teaching the player tricks or let them sit with them, resulting in a really wonky learning curve. The pace of learning in the game isn't very good, as the player essentially learns one new game per level, which makes it hard to really solidify any previously learned skills. However, Card Shark feels like it's incorporating tricks at the expense of gameplay. RELATED: Atomic Heart's Polymer Glove Throws Back to BioShock's Best Combat Mechanics
